"Great American" Hannity Promoting Secession

Reported by Ellen - July 30, 2009 -

“Great American” Sean Hannity is, apparently, willing to stop at nothing to push his anti-Obama agenda. On last night’s (7/29/09) Hannity, he spoke enthusiastically of possible secession movements in three states. What’s next for this “patriot?” Promoting civil war? With video.

“The Obama administration’s drastic expansion of the federal government has incited rebellion in several states,” Hannity began enthusiastically. He played a clip of Texas Governor Rick Perry saying, at a Tax Day Tea Party, “Texas has yet to learn submission to any oppression (to wild cheers)… We didn’t like oppression then, we don’t like oppression now.” He forgot to mention that Perry, who talked a good talk about secession that day, asked for federal help to deal with swine flu less than two weeks later. Just a few weeks ago, Perry reversed his earlier decision and decided to seek federal stimulus funds.

Hannity continued, “The Alaskan Independence Party, which promotes secession… is over 13,000 members strong. Now Nebraska lawmakers are raising the possibility of secession in reaction to President Obama’s heavy-handed policies.”

The guests were two Nebraska state senators “supporting a bill to assert the sovereignty of their state.”

A banner on the screen read: States rebel against government expansion, first Texas now Nebraska.

State Senator Tony Fulton said he’s bringing a “resolution to discuss the reach of the federal government… What exactly does the 10th Amendment mean? Do the states really have rights here or not?”

But State Senator Mark Christensen told an undoubtedly disappointed Hannity, “We’re not looking at trying to secede.”

Perhaps to bolster his sagging story line, Hannity launched into one of his favorite distortions, that the Obama administration’s agenda “is, by definition socialism.” Actually, no, it isn’t. Merriam-Webster defines socialism as, “any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.” Obama has neither advocated nor moved toward anything like that.

The fact that Fox News keeps allowing Hannity to put forward this falsehood indicates they care as much about truth as they do about race relations.

This is not the first time “Great American” Hannity has publicly supported secession. But at the end of the segment, Hannity played it down, “I think one of the ways this can be stopped is through this argument that states actually have enumerated, you know, responsibilities as well here and it seems like that is being ignored. So we’re gonna watch this movement, guys.”
