Fox Nation Suggests Holder Wants Illegal Immigrants To Vote

Reported by Ellen - June 8, 2009 -

They never tire of race baiting on Fox News and now they're doing it on Fox Nation. The latest example I've found is their baseless suggestion that Attorney General Eric Holder wants non-citizens in Georgia to vote because it would be racist to exclude them. Fox Nation's headline reads, "Georgia Only Wants Citizens Voting ... Holder Says That's Racist." In reality, Holder has objected to Georgia's system of checking voters' citizenship as racist.

The AP article upon which the Fox Nation headline is based clearly states the Justice Department's position:

In a letter released on Monday, the Justice Department said the state's voter verification program is frequently inaccurate and has a "discriminatory effect" on minority voters. The decision means Georgia must halt the citizenship checks, although the state can still ask the Justice Department to reconsider, according to the letter and to the Georgia secretary of state's office.

"This flawed system frequently subjects a disproportionate number of African-American, Asian and/or Hispanic voters to additional, and more importantly, erroneous burdens on the right to register to vote," Loretta King, acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Department's civil rights division, said. King's letter was sent to Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker on Friday.

There is nothing in the article to suggest that Holder thinks it's racist to require that only citizens vote. In fact, Holder is not quoted in the article at all. The opinion cited comes from an acting assistant attorney general. One can't help but have the impression that Fox just made up what Holder "said."
