Memo To Fox: Obama Did NOT Say U.S. Is A Muslim Country

Reported by Ellen - June 5, 2009 -

Fox Nation, which claims it operates by "observing the basic rules of civility and mutual respect and, most importantly, strengthening our diverse society by striving for unity," posted a misleading and potentially inflammatory headline about President Barack Obama, Obama Says U.S. Is a 'Muslim Country'. The only problem is, Obama never said that. If Fox Nation had bothered to read the article it linked to, titled Obama Says U.S. Could Be Seen as a Muslim Country, Too (my emphasis), they would have known. Or maybe Fox read the article and deliberately chose to be more inflammatory, in sync with the words of anti-Islamic extremist, Brigitte Gabriel, who similarly misrepresented Obama's words earlier in the week on Hannity. He did not correct the record.

From The New York Times article linked to by Fox Nation:

“And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world,” Mr. Obama said. “And so there’s got to be a better dialogue and a better understanding between the two peoples.”

Brigitte Gabriel on Hannity, on June 2, 2009: "And (Obama) said 'AMERICA is one of the GRANDEST Muslim countries in the WORLD.'” (her emphasis)

Just as there was no correction to Gabriel, the misleading Fox Nation headline seems to have been up since at least June 2 (the earliest day of any comments I found).

H/T reader "Quickdraw Magraw" for the tip.
