Fox Works Overtime on Obama Aunt Story, Takes Vacation on Palin Family Arrest

A story broke last week of the arrest -- for twice burglarizing the same house -- of Diana Palin, Todd Palin’s half sister (which would make her, yes, Sarah Palin’s half sister-in-law). MSN, CBS, NY Daily News, People Magazine, New York Daily News, AP, UPI, Examiner, Chicago Tribune, The Conservative American and even the Drudge Report (to name a few) all covered the story. You know, considering that on October 8, 2008, FOXNews.com ran a story on its Politics web page that Sarah Palin is distantly related to both former President Franklin Roosevelt and Princess Diana, and assuming from that story that Fox has an interest in the Palin family ties (even those as distant as nine cousins once removed), I figured this breaking story about another Palin family tie -- this one a little closer than nine cousins out -- had to be out there somewhere. So I searched "Diana Palin" on FOXNews.com and got no results.

Okay, so FOX News no longer has any interest in the family ties of politicians, or would-be politicians, or has-been politicians (especially some half-relative), they’ve risen above the fray, this is all just fluff and families of politicians don‘t matter, and . . . Wait, what?

And let’s not forget Fox 28, Fox 12 in Boise, "Cleveland's own" Fox 8. . . I got tired of googling.

I grant you, I might have missed some Palin in-law/burglary reference on Fox News. The point isn’t, of course, whether Fox News mentioned it. The point is that Palin’s tie to a law-breaking half-family member doesn’t warrant a full-blown story, repeated ad nauseum, but then-candidate and now President Obama’s does.

It might also be worth mentioning here that Fox reported . . . And reported . . . And reported . . . on Zeituni Onyango, who is President Obama’s late father’s half-sister, last year despite the fact that, according to the Washington Post, Federal privacy law restricts U.S. immigration agencies from disclosing information about citizens and permanent residents, and DHS policy similarly limits disclosures about the status of legal and illegal immigrants. Asylum-seekers are granted greater protection, because of the sensitive nature of their claims and the risks of retaliation. (Now we know why that protection is in place.) In fact, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the matter had been referred to the agency's Office of Professional Responsibility and its parent department's inspector general to determine “whether there was a violation of policy in publicly disclosing individual case information.” Didn’t see that report anywhere on Fox either.

In Sarah Palin’s defense, you can’t pick your family. (Thank God we get to pick our Vice Presidents.) In Fox News’ defense . . . I got nothing.
