Laura Ingraham Backs and Ducks on Her Meghan McCain Attack

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Laura Ingraham, filling in for Bill O’Reilly on The Factor on March 18th, spent two segments - the entire Talking Points Memo, plus a later panel discussion - in a full-blown, red-faced, Foxette rant, attempting to defend herself for her recent catty comment about Meghan McCain being “plus size.” Using the “best defense is a good offense” strategy, she threw in everything but the kitchen sink to rationalize, excuse, and defend her indefensible position.

As if her catty comment about McCain and her embarrassing attempt to excuse her behavior wasn’t bad enough, she apparently sent out an e-mail, as follows: “Memo to Meghan McCain: Enjoy the media coverage while it lasts, but know you're being used. You are the flavor of the month in left-wing media land because you are a Republican bashing the GOP ... The left's indignation in this instance is manufactured and totally phony. If any off-the-cuff remark about a woman's size was condemnable, then where was the outrage when President Obama made a passing reference to Jessica Simpson's "weight battle" during his Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer? (Author’s emphasis) And of course they look the other way when obvious personal attacks are levied against conservatives.” (Memo to Ingraham: Naming Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and Sarah Palin as VICTIMS of the liberal mud-slinging war is both laughable and sad. Next time, find real victims. Limbaugh spends every day on the radio name-calling liberals and Democrats (as well as women and minorities); Coulter is a one-woman smear machine in a desperate race to milk her dying media attention; and Palin spent months on the campaign trail desperately trying to cast nasty and blatantly false aspersions on our President.)

Let’s cut to the chase, here. What did McCain actually do to inspire this venom? She blogs a little, she writes for the Daily Beast, she leveled criticism at Ann Coulter, who everybody but the Right-Wing Talking Points view as a psycho (but if that’s who the Foxettes want to emulate, have at it, they‘re doing great so far), she suggested that the Republicans could do a better job of finding a workable message. Ingraham was being catty, petty, and spiteful toward McCain because McCain insulted Ann Coulter, and Ingraham knows it -- which is why she got her back up about being called on it.

More importantly, Ingraham lied when she implied that President Obama plucked some fat remark out of nowhere and targeted Simpson -- and she knows that, too. (Memo to Ingraham: People check facts.) The truth is that during the President’s interview with Matt Lauer, Lauer showed President Obama a magazine cover in which he had been preempted for Jessica Simpson. Reading the cover of the magazine, Obama said, “Who is in a weight battle apparently. Yeah. Oh well.”

So if this is a phony controversy manufactured by the left, why spend two segments focusing on it?
