FOX News “Liberal” Juan Williams Smears Michelle Obama: "She's Got The Stokely Carmichael In A Designer Dress Thing Going"

Reported by Ellen - January 26, 2009 -

On tonight's O'Reilly Factor, “liberal” Juan Williams gratuitously and falsely depicted Michelle Obama as some kind of black radical by saying, among other things, that “she's got the Stokely Carmichael in a designer dress thing going,” that her instinct is to “Blame America” and play “the victim.” In a noteworthy role reversal, Bill O'Reilly and conservative guest Mary Katherine Ham were much kinder. UPDATED: NPR responds to complaints about Williams.

During the discussion, O'Reilly asked how Obama will likely “use this power” of being the First Lady.

Williams and Ham answered that Obama will not get involved with policy but would focus on her family and other family issues such as those facing military families.

Ham said Obama would need to walk a fine line between being an engaged First Lady and “not drop(ping) sound bites like she did during the campaign that were not helpful to her husband.” That, according to Ham, might make her “end up like Hillary Clinton.” Comment: It doesn't seem to me that Hillary Clinton did so badly for herself.

O'Reilly took Obama's side by saying sympathetically, “Anything that she says will be used against her. Absolutely.”

Then Williams jumped in to add this gratuitous smear: “Let me just tell you this. If you think about liabilities for President Obama that are close to him, Joe Biden is up there. But Michelle Obama's right there. Michelle Obama, you know she's got the Stokely Carmichael in a designer dress thing going. If she starts talking (Williams started wagging his finger), as Mary Katherine suggested, her instinct is to start with this 'Blame America,' you know, 'I'm the victim.' If that stuff starts to come out, people will go bananas and she'll go from being the new Jackie O to being something of an albatross.”

O'Reilly quickly said, “She's not going to do that.”

Ham said, “She's been smarter about it lately.”

In fact, Michelle Obama has never been a black radical and, like her husband, has always been a part of mainstream, integrated America.
