Ouch. Not a Good Day for the McCain Campaign in More Ways Than One

Reported by Melanie - September 24, 2008 -

On a day (September 24, 2008) when Fox was obviously sweating it, not knowing exactly how to spin John McCain suspending his campaign and calling for Friday's debate to be delayed, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili appeared on Your World w/Neil Cavuto and it didn't go well from a McCain standpoint. Cavuto apparently expected that Saakashvili would have effusive and lavish praise for Sarah Palin after having met her today at the United Nations but, well, let's just say things didn't go exactly as planned.

Cavuto: "Let me ask you ah, Mr. President, I know you met with someone who wants to be the next vice president of the United States, Sarah Palin. There were many at the UN who said she isn't up to speed. She isn't up to the job. Um, what did you think?"

Saakashvili: "Well, first of all, I met both of them. I mean, Joe Biden is a long-time friend. Amazingly smart guy who gets very good perspective on Georgia's situation. Um, I ah, met Sarah Palin and, ah, she was wonderful. She was absolutely delightful."

Cavuto asked Saakashvili if he had any of the same doubts about her as his colleagues, and though he spoke for roughly 45 seconds (he's very savvy), he refused to answer.

Cavuto asked "Who do you like more?" Again he refused to say but after another long, diplomatic answer he said, "I was very pleased to see her."

After Saakashvili talked a bit about Reagan's instincts and about John McCain, Cavuto said, right after the invasion, "He [McCain] came to your defense immediately. Now, Barack Obama was cautious; waited a little bit. Um, you said a lot of nice things about John McCain. Maybe you said some nice things about Barack Obama but...

Saakashvili interrupted: "Barack Obama called me and he was..."

Cavuto interrupted: "When did he call you?"

Saakashvili: "I mean, he called within a few days after..."

Cavuto interrupted: "When did John McCain call you?"

Saakashvili: "I mean, John McCain was the first to call but Obama was very competent. Very supportive. He called me several times and I have to tell you, Joe Biden called one day too. He was the first one to come [up] with [a] very concrete program which was to do a, b, c, d and I was very impressed by that."

Comment: Hah! Not exactly a ringing endorsement, eh? And this was so great too because Saakashvili actually thinks Fox is part of our legendary "free press," poor idealistic guy (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way). He hasn't a clue that you do not, repeat, do not praise Democrats in any way whatsoever on Fox!
