Dick Morris Paints Palin As Ethics Crusader, Overlooks Corruption Allegations Against Her

Reported by Ellen - August 31, 2008 -

Dick Morris praised Sarah Palin to the hilt on Friday night’s (8/29/08) Hannity & Colmes. He particularly extolled her virtues as an ethics crusader, exclaiming,“God, this is John McCain the reformer back again!” But Morris failed to mention that “ethics crusader” Palin is being investigated for corruption by the state of Alaska for allegedly improper attempts to fire a state trooper who happened to be in the midst of a custody battle with Palin’s sister. With video.

Morris was downright ecstatic over McCain’s selection of Palin for VP. Morris said, “The thing about Sarah Palin, and it’s the key thing to remember, is this woman challenged the corrupt Republican establishment of Alaska... Sarah Palin took that establishment on, challenged (Frank) Murkowski in a primary fight, got the attorney general fired. She’s probably the only governor in America that beat the incumbent governor of her own party in a primary fight over corruption. This woman is a heroine. And to have someone like that come into Washington, to clean up Washington, is extraordinary!”

Morris added that when Palin served on the Alaska oil board, she blew the whistle on corruption that she found. Morris said, “She forced the head of the board and the Attorney General, who wanted to punish her, both Republicans, to leave. Then she ran against the Republican governor, beat him in a primary and she walks on water in Alaska because everybody knows how honest she is. This is a crusader.”

Well, not everybody knows how honest she is. The Anchorage Daily News reports that after Palin insisted her administration never pressured anyone to fire her former brother-in-law, a recently revealed audio recording shows an aide pushing the Public Safety Department to fire the state trooper in question.

“I think you’re absolutely right. She’s a crusader,” Hannity chimed in.

From there, Hannity went on to distort Barack Obama’s position on energy. First, Hannity falsely suggested that Obama is not an “all of the above” kind of guy like himself when it comes to energy. Hannity bragged that he supports drilling, coal, nuclear energy, wind power and conservation. He either deliberately lied or else didn’t bother to learn the truth as he continued by saying, “Compare that to Barack Obama: Inflate your tires, get a tune up.”

Alan Colmes interrupted to say, “That’s not his whole plan.”

Hannity falsely insisted, “Well, that’s pretty much his plan.” Well, if Hannity bothered to read the plan before he spoke, he’d know that Obama’s plan includes all the factors Hannity cited. But Hannity always seems to feel that facts are for other people. Apparently, “real journalism” FOX News, has no problem with his regular distortions, either.

Meanwhile, Morris couldn’t stop crowing over Palin’s morality. “God, this is John McCain the reformer back again. And that’s what he’s got to do at his convention and good for him!”

Media Matters also posted about this segment, noting that Morris has flip-flopped on whether Palin has enough experience to be a Vice President.
