FOX Friends paint Obama as humorless, no fun

Reported by Chrish - July 15, 2008 -

This morning 7/15/08 on FOX and Friends Monica Crowley and Bob Beckel were guests for a segment that commented on the critically important election issue, did Barack Obama respond "correctly" to the New Yorker magazine cover depicting him and his wife as terrorist-loving, America-hating radical Muslims?

Updated 12:30 AM 7/16/08, below

The magazine claims the art was satirical, mocking the ridiculousness of the rumors being circulated in emails (and on FOX News and other right-wing media outlets). As such, said Crowley, the Obamas should have laughed it off. Their expression of disapproval their "sensitivity," prompts people to ask, well, what are you so defensive about? She appears to be saying that shethinks they doth protest too much.

Beckel said laughing this off would be as easy as laughing off malaria; the cover represents every malicious rumor Obama's had to fight off over the past 6-7 months.

Crowley persistently said about the stereotypes "we assume they're not true," so why not just dismiss it? Rather than "taking it to heart" and "internalizing it," the Obama camp should laugh it off.

The banner on the lower thyrd read "Obama camp furious at New Yorker" to reinforce the perception that their reaction is somehow inappropriate, when in fact the Obama campaign released a statement saying "...most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree." Obama has refused to comment on the cover himself, so this fury and defensiveness is a media creation.

(Unlike Bill O'Reilly's feigned outrage at the caricatures of him accompanying a New York Times book review.)

This segment dovetailed well with an earlier segment, where the hosts discussed among themselves how late night talk show hosts are not able to make fun of Barack Obama; of course it couched that they are "afraid" to joke about him. They agreed there's nothing funny about him (I've seen more than a few jokes made about his ears) and he gives them no fodder; writers complain he's "not buffoonish."

How refreshing!

Sub-host Dave Briggs asserted that Obama is a most thin-skinned candidate; every time he's criticized he responds and doesn't laugh it off!

These segments were all Obama-bashing, accusing the candidate of not having a sense of humor and taking his reputation as he runs for president too seriously. I would seriously love to see any one of these buffoons take 1/10th of the garbage flung at Obama and see how amicably they shake it off.

Update:
In case you don't slog through all the comments, see at least this one by dd which is an excellent rebuttal to the asinine charges.
