FOX Friends accuse Jimmy Carter of aiding Iran, outing Israeli nuclear "secrets"

Reported by Chrish - May 27, 2008 -

Over a lower-third chyron that read "Carter Outs Israel" and "Carter Confirms Nukes" this morning 5/27/08 on FOX and Friends, the trio on the couch bashed former president Jimmy Carter for exposing that Israel has nuclear weapons. They neglected to tell their audience that this information was already widely known and confirmed by the Israeli Prime Minister and the US Secretary of Defense.

Still upset that Carter met with (elected) Hamas leaders in Palestine, Gretchen Carlson accused that he's given out "secret information about Israel" and how many nukes they have. Brian Kilmeade agreed and took a slap at the one-term president, though I don't recall that particular phrase ever being used when speaking of G.H.W.B..

Brian Kilmeade appeared to be reading when he said that Carter said "Well Israel's got an arsenal, about 150...excuse me? We never heard that confirmed before. We've heard rumors about that. Russia 12,000 nukes, we've got about 12,000 too. France and the UK, a few hundred each. Well, thanks a lot." He let slip yet another inadvertent truth that legitimizes Carter speaking on such issues: he's a nuclear physicist. Yeah, you thought he was some dumb peanut farmer (though I have yet to meet a dumb farmer), saying Carter said he didn't think Iran could ever put together any kind of formidable nuclear arsenal.

Steve Doocy gave us the "extraordinary" quote verbatim: "The US has more than 12,000 nuclear weapons, the Soviet Union has about the same. Great Britain and France have several hundred, and Israel has 150 or more." I guess they figure since "the cat's out of the bag" it's OK to amplify it, as long as they can blame Democrat Carter for the slip.

He went on to say that although many people throughout the Mideast have 'assumed' Israel had these weapons, no one has ever officially confirmed it. Now that Carter has confirmed that Israel has WMDs, "he's just helped Iran!" Now Iran can say they have to arm themselves because Israel has 'em.

Gretchen Carlson added the talking point that the (unnamed) former Israeli military intelligence chief had just one word: "irresponsible."

"Loose lips, Jimmy, loose lips..." was the final word from Doocy.

Not so fast.

Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, during a visit to Europe, December 2006:

"Iran openly, explicitly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map."Can you say that this is the same level, when they are aspiring to have nuclear weapons, as France, America, Russia and Israel?"

"...one of his ministers urged a return to silence about the country's nuclear capabilities.

"I would suggest that all those who want to talk about the issue, for God's sake and for the sake of Israel's security, stop it," said the Infrastructure Minister Benjamin Ben Eliezer."

Earlier that year,

"Incoming U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates told a Senate committee on Thursday that Israel has nuclear weapons, and that this partially explains Iran's motivation to acquire nuclear weapons.

"They are surrounded by powers with nuclear weapons - Pakistan to their east, the Russians to the north, the Israelis to the west and us in the Persian Gulf," he told the Senate committee during his confirmation hearing."

Mohamed ElBaradei, Director General of the IAEA, treats Israel as a country with Nuclear weapons who operates outside the NNPT. Independent journalists report that Israel has American-supplied nuclear-tipped Harpoon missiles on submarines.

If FOX and Friends think Jimmy Carter "outed" anything, they are only exposing their own ignorance. And bias, yet again.
