O'Reilly's hissy fit over Bill Maher's religion jokes

Reported by Chrish - April 16, 2008 -

Bill O'Reilly was in high dudgeon for Talking Points Memo last night 4/15/08 because snide remarks made by comedian Bill Maher about the Pope, the Texas polygamist "cult," the Catholic Church, and pedophilia were not being roundly denounced by the media. Nope, the New York Times, the LA Times, CNN, NBC, none of them even mentioned the objectionable humor. What has become of the free press in America? I heard a lot of f-bombs on the Comedy Central autism fundraiser special the other night, and I've scoured the New York Times - not a peep. Commies.

O'Reilly said the Pope deserved respect, but the rise of secularism makes it difficult for any religious leader to spread his message. What? He said there is a semi-hostile press and millions of Americans still angry over the priest pedophilia scandal, but Bill Maher supposedly showed a shocking lack of respect in his comments - which BillO promptly re-aired in full (twice more in re-runs later, and on the website tomorrow).

O'Reilly threw out a straw-man argument - can you imagine the uproar if Maher had said similar things about a Jewish or Muslim leader or a minority? This is just more proof that it's open season on Christians in America (except these were Catholic jokes, not Christian; very pointedly so.)

He sequed into media-bashing mode, saying "they" give Christian-bashers and America-bashers (citing Jeremiah Wright specifically) a complete pass.

Has he not been listening to the "news" the past 3-4 weeks? It's been all Jerry, all the time.

He complained that Media Matters has had no comment, nor has CNN, NBC, the New York Times or the LA Times. No doubt, the Pope is praying for them.

Comment: This is the most ridiculous item perhaps ever. Like the New York freaking Times is supposed to report to its readers that Bill Maher made some snarky observations and bad taste jokes about religion? O'Reilly is having a hissy fit, hoping some other sheep in the media will pick it up and amplify it.
