Gingrich: Conservatives should have been more critical of Bush, vows to be better about it should McCain win

Reported by Chrish - February 8, 2008 -

Newt Gingrich appeared with guest host Laura Ingraham on The O'Reilly factor tonight 2/8/08, discussing her Talking Points that aimed to rally dispirited conservatives. Gingrich said he will be supportive of John McCain over Obama or Clinton but would be critical of him on issues where he disagrees, and urges "the conservative movement" to do the same.
With video.

He put it "I don't think we should have this leader principle, that whoever gets to be the head of the Republican Party we should all salute." Conservatives will have to hold their noses and vote for McCain, but they don't need to "salute" everything he does (citing his disagreements with McCain on immigration ("amnesty"), McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform ("unConstitutional"), and on taxes.

As far as VP choice, Gingrich is interested to see what McCain does. If he goes to the middle to garner Independent voters, he'll lose the base, and vice-versa. They discussed the huge dosparity in voter turnout last Tuesday (14 million Democrats v 8 million Republicans) and lamented the return to the "country club conservatives." If they don't break out of "business as usual" (whatever that is) in the next 5-6 months, they'll simply lose.

The whole tone was respectful, calm, professional. Compare it to the next two videos here. In the Code Pink segment Ingraham overtalked, badgered, twisted, and mocked Medea Benjamin, telling her people think she's making a fool of herself. She behaved the same way to second guest Annie Oakley, director of a performance art troupe that endeavors to tell the stories of sex industry workers. The contrast in treatment of Gingrich, dressed in expensive corporate clothing like herself and touting the same ideology, with her rude and scornful treatment of the two women who present themselves differently and who have very different views than she does, is striking. Fair and balanced? In your dreams.
