Fox Terrorizes its Audience With a Non-Terror Story (Again)

Reported by Melanie - February 8, 2008 -

One of the early segments today (February 8, 2008) on Your World w/Neil Cavuto featured Catherine Herridge reporting on two fuel tanker trucks that went missing overnight and were apparently stolen from a constructions site in Virginia. Herridge's beat is the Department of Homeland Security, the intelligence community and the Department of Justice, so when she's on you know the issue is t-e-r-r-o-r.

Initially, Herridge's report was alarming as she explained how the trucks could be used as bombs and that Homeland Security was tracking the situation. But it slowly fizzled when she admitted that drivers may have failed to register that they were removing the trucks; tanker trucks are stolen nearly every day somewhere in the U.S., and given the price of gasoline, the thieves (if they were stolen) stood to pocket thousands of dollars by selling the contents.

The article about this on Fox's website is almost identical to one sent out by the AP at 10: 21 a.m. this morning. Fox's article adds that the homeland security folks said, "it remains a local matter, adding there are no credible threats."

Comment: Six hours later, instead of downplaying this (or not reporting it at all) Fox brings on its Homeland Security correspondent to remind us that we should all be afraid. There was probably a time when "news" outlets were cautious about not crying wolf but those days are obviously long gone. Now, "news" organizations like Fox are manipulating the news and using it against us. Ain't Amrrrka great?
