Greta Van Susteren Reported "Breaking News" That Wasn't

Reported by Melanie - December 1, 2007 -

Fox as a whole, and Greta Van Susteren, the anchor of its purported legal news show specifically, has followed the Natalee Holloway case since Day One. Van Susteren has devoted hours and hours (and hours and hours) to the case, to the extent that she couldn't find time to spend one second -- literally -- on the Scooter Libby trial. Van Susteren has a close personal relationship with Holloway's mother; she has made many trips to Aruba to interview the locals; and she frequently boasts about the "contacts" who feed her "breaking news."

Either Van Susteren's "contacts" aren't all that reliable or she is so eager to report "breaking news" that she'll believe anything they tell her.

Yesterday (November 30, 2007) at 4:31 p.m. ET, Van Susteren appeared on Your World w/Neil Cavuto (after a FOX NEWS ALERT) and reported breaking news that wasn't. Cavuto introduced her with, "And to Aruba and a major development in the Natalee Holloway case. Minutes ago, word that the Kalpoe brothers are getting released. Released from jail! Our Greta Van Susteren with all the details. Greta, what can you tell us?"

Van Susteren: "I can tell you the Kalpoe brothers are being released right as we speak it should happen."

Here's video:

This morning (December 1, 2007) at 8:38 a.m., during a "news" break on Fox & Friends, the news reader said, "Suspects in the Natalee Holloway case will be set free today. Here we go again. That according to the prosecutor in the case..."

Here's that video:

Comment: Beware of the "breaking news" you see on Fox because "breaking news" can "break" there in s-l-o-o-o-w motion.
