Grapevine Whine - Just BeKos

Reported by Nancy - July 25, 2007 -

Curiously, Brit Hume used picking #2 on last night's Grapevine segment of Special Report to address (sort of) an issue with which most bloggers are all too familiar: when & where does free speech become hate speech? Of course, this being FOX News, Hume didn't bother with balance or fairness, & failed to mention any of the many reactionary sites that thrive on pure vitriol.

Here's picking #2:

The increasingly nasty discourse on some web blogs has led the creator of the popular liberal site Daily Kos to warn his contributors to knock it off. Markos Moulitsas writes his patience is wearing thin with what he calls "an alarming rise in diaries & comments that seek to impugn without evidence the motives of those they disagree with on various issues." He refers to the comments as "so damn ugly" & says they are a serious threat to the site. Meanwhile the Wonkette blog is being taken to task for a posting that referred to "Rudy Jew-liani" in an interview with the "Jew York Times." A rival blogger observed "Wonkette, that foul-mouthed but titillating blogger of Washington foibles, seems to have gone anti-Semitic." Wonkette has demanded an apology & implied legal action if one is not forthcoming.

Comments: Isn't it interesting that Hume chose Daily Kos to illustrate "nasty discourse" & Wonkette to illustrate hate speech, rather than some of the more obvious reactionary sites that are full of death threats, obscenities, vicious personal attacks, etc, etc, etc.

If you'd like to complain to Fox about this, email: special@foxnews.com

NOTE TO READERS: Please stay on topic (Hume, Special Report, free speech vs hate speech). O/T comments will be deleted. Reminder: I have no tolerance level whatsoever for personal attacks -- so you can scream & jump up & down & argue till you're blue in the face, but do NOT attack each other. Thanks.
