Gretchen Carlson and Guest Disrespect Dr. Joycelyn Elders

Reported by Deborah - July 23, 2007 -

FOX is having a great time advancing the non-story about Barack Obama's comment about sex education in kindergarten. This morning, 7/23/07, former Surgeon General, Dr. Joycelyn Elders was the victim of a well orchestrated gang up by Gretchen Carlson and Christine O'Donnell. Their arrogant disrespect of Dr. Elders was both astonishing and nauseating to watch.

Carlson opened by saying that Mitt Romney and other Republican candidates say " No Way!" to sex education in kindergarten. Instead of asking Elders for an opinion she said. "I assume you agree with Barack Obama".

Dr. Elders said she agreed totally and spoke rationally about how children should know where the should not be touched and also be able to tell an adult when any type of touching feels uncomfortable.

Christine O'Donnell came in with an immediate attack on Elders accusing her of promoting a cartoon " with naked children touching themselves inappropriately with inanimate objects'.
She didn't stop talking long enough to allow Elders to respond to the cryptic charge launching into a very disjointed and illogical argument.

O'Donnell said sex ed " breaks down the natural modesty that protects a child" and " parents and only parents know when their child is appropriate." After claiming kindergarten teachers can't provide a loving and nurturing environment to teach this subject, she said opening up to teachers only makes it easier to talk to strangers with candy in the playground. O'Donnell proclaimed " I don't need to tell you the thousands of statistics that say it's harmful."

O'Donnell kept talking over Elders playing the expert and acting as if Dr. Elders knows nothing about the subject. However, Christine O'Donnell has absolutely no medical or psychological credentials and no experience in any educational setting. Here is Dr Joycelyn Elder's qualifications from Wikipedia

In 1952, she received her B.A. in biology from Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas. After working as a nurse's aide in a Veterans Administration hospital in Milwaukee for a period, she joined the United States Army in May, 1953. During her 3 years in the Army, she was trained as a physical therapist. She then attended the University of Arkansas Medical School, where she obtained her M.D. degree in 1960. After completing an internship at the University of Minnesota Hospital and a residency in pediatrics at the University of Arkansas Medical Center, Elders earned an M.S. in Biochemistry in 1967.

Elders then received a National Institutes of Health career development award, also serving as assistant professor in pediatrics at the University of Arkansas Medical Center from 1967. She was promoted to associate professor in 1971 and professor in 1976. Her research interests focused on endocrinology, and she received certification as a pediatric endocrinologist in 1978. She became an expert on childhood sexual development.[citation needed] Elders received a D.Sc. from Bates College in 2002.

The interview fiasco continued and Christine O'Donnell refused to show Dr. Elders an ounce of respect and Gretchan Carlson was just letting it all happen. Here's something that Dr. Elders said in 2001 about teaching abstinence in the schools. Perhaps if they had let her talk, they might have learned something.
