Hannity And Bozell Paint Ann Coulter As Liberal Media Victim

Reported by Ellen - July 10, 2007 -

Where else but FOX News would the invective-filled Coulter be portrayed as a victim of the so-called liberal media? But that’s exactly what Sean Hannity and Brent Bozell, of the conservative Media Research Center, tried to do last night (7/9/07) on Hannity & Colmes as they tried to compare reaction to her statements in the mainstream media to a remark on an obscure blog. As they conveniently misrepresented the context of the blog comment, they also conveniently “forgot” about Coulter’s long record of similar comments. With video.

In the blog post in question, Hart Williams theorizes that right-wing conservatives want to kill liberals in a civil war (Comment: judging from some of our hate mail, it’s not an unreasonable conclusion). Williams then writes:

I will only reiterate what I’ve said before: WHEN they manage to inevitably push their litany of hatespeak into actual bloodletting, and full-blown civil war (for there is no other place that this hatred of American against American can go), well …I’ve got dibs on Rush, as soon as it’s legal and lawful to shoot him. Whoever wants Ted Nugent is welcome to him, but I would prefer that you would call it now, so as to conserve on ammunition.

Not the kind of language I would endorse but I’ve read plenty worse from the other side right here on our own blog (I immediately delete any talk of violence from anyone) so I’m sure it can be found elsewhere, too.

Williams’ blog has such low readership that it barely shows up on a graph comparing it to News Hounds and News Hounds is pretty small potatoes compared to blogs like The Daily Kos. But Hannity and Bozell quickly compared Williams’ post to Ann Coulter’s recent statement about John Edwards on Good Morning America. Disregarding the disparity in audience reach, the two conservatives whined that Coulter had received a disproportionate amount of criticism. Bozell further claimed that Coulter's comment had been distorted by the media.

In the video below, Alan Colmes and Bozell argue about the context of Coulter’s GMA comment. Supposedly, Coulter was simply paraphrasing Bill Maher’s remarks about Cheney when she said, “if I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.” But, as Colmes pointed out, Coulter misrepresented Maher’s remark. Also, just because she was trying to quote someone else is not exactly license to say she’ll wish for his death in an assassination plot.

But, even if you give Coulter the benefit of the doubt in that remark, she has a long history of explicitly endorsing murder and in much wider venues than the Democratic Daily blog. For example, Media Matters has documented six instances where Coulter has made such statements as “They shot the wrong Lincoln,” referring to then Senator Lincoln Chafee, and, referring to radio host Melanie Morgan's assertion that she would have no problem with New York Times executive editor Bill Keller being sent to the gas chamber, Coulter said “I prefer a firing squad but I’m open to debate on the method of execution.” Those statements came from Coulter’s 8/30/06 and 7/12/06 syndicated columns, respectively.

Colmes brought up an excerpt from Coulter’s 1998 book (published by the mainstream Regnery) in which she said that the debate over Bill Clinton should have been “whether to impeach or assassinate.”

These statements were all made in high-profile venues and yet Coulter has continued to be invited on national news shows such as Hannity & Colmes, Hardball and, of course, Good Morning America. Somehow, I doubt Williams will be on any of those shows in the near future.

Both Bozell and Hannity claimed to be shocked, shocked that Coulter would say such a thing about Clinton, even though Hannity heard Colmes bring it up and other similar ones by her one year ago on Hannity & Colmes.

Anyone want to bet that Hannity won’t remember it the next time she appears on his show again?
