Mike Nifong Disbarred

Reported by Marie Therese - June 16, 2007 -

FOX News has just announced that North Carolina District Attorney Michael Nifong has been found guilty of prosecutorial misconduct and disbarred. Attorneys for the families of the three now exonerated Duke Lacrosse players indicate that they are happy with the verdict and hope that it will signal a new day in jurisprudence in North Carolina and elsewhere. They suggest that this verdict sends a message to other prosecutors that there will be heavy price to pay for railroading defendants into prison through the use of various unfair and illegal tactics. We concur heartily. There is no crime more vile than a government official abusing and manipulating the overwhelming power of the state to imprison (and in some cases execute) innocent men and women. Hopefully, this will lead North Carolina to re-open and examine all of Mike Nifong's prior cases. FOX News (Greta, Hannity, O'Reilly et al) has this one pegged right from the beginning. Sadly, instead of focusing exclusively on Nifong, some on FOX News opted to stigmatize, demean and lash out at the accuser, whom it now appears, was equally used by Nifong as a pawn in a game of "win at all costs." Alberto Gonzales, pay attention! You may be next!
