Do YOU Know Who Luis Posada Carriles Is?

Reported by Melanie - May 10, 2007 -

There are times when Fox "covers" an important story in such an uninformative and vague way that one can only assume the reason it was mentioned at all was so Fox could say it was. Such was the case last night (May 9, 2007) during Special Report when Brit Hume "reported" on Luis Posada Carriles.

In very brief sum, Luis Posada Carriles, an admitted former CIA operative, is accused of being one of the masterminds of a l976 mid-air explosion that demolished a Cuban airliner, killing 73 people. He was involved in the Iran-Contra affair and in the mid-90's, he allegedly arranged a string of bombings at tourist sites inside Cuba. In 2000, he faced accusations that he was involved in the attempted assassination of Fidel Castro while Castro was visiting Panama.

Immediately after the l976 airliner bombing, Carriles was arrested in Venezuela and served ten years in jail before escaping. He was jailed in Panama for the attempted assassination of Castro and served four years before being pardoned in 2004 by the then-president of Panama who had close ties to the Bush administration.

Carriles, who resides in Miami, sought asylum in the U.S. in 2005 but was subsequently charged with immigration violations. In the meantime, Venezuela, which has sought his extradition, claims that the Bush administration is harboring a terrorist and protecting Carriles, saying that, "under the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Civil Aviation (Montreal Convention) and the Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings (Terrorist Bombings Convention), the United States...is bound to investigate Venezuela’s allegations and to extradite or prosecute Posada Carriles if such allegations are well-founded."

Yesterday, a Judge threw out the immigration charges altogether, making Carriles a free man.

I'm willing to bet that if you polled Fox's audience, they would have absolutely no idea who Luis Posada Carriles is, because, unlike, say, the case of Natalee Holloway or Rosie O'Donnell, this is not a story that Fox has paid much attention to. Nonetheless, out of the blue, Hume said this about the issue last night:

A Federal judge in Texas has thrown out an indictment on charges of immigration fraud against a Cuban man who fiercely opposed Fidel Castro and worked for the CIA. Luis Posada Carriles is accused of entering the US illegally and lying about it. But, the judge said the translation of Carriles' statement was so bad it was unreliable as evidence.

No doubt the audience was left scratching its collective head, wondering who in the world Luis Posada Carriles is, but they probably figured he must be a good guy because he "opposed Fidel Castro and worked for the CIA."
