“Heretic” Hannity Bullies Clergyman
Reported by Ellen - March 11, 2007 -
Is there anyone Sean Hannity won’t browbeat? Friday night (3/9/07) on Hannity & Colmes, “good Catholic” Hannity badgered and cudgeled the Rev. Thomas Euteneuer, president of the Catholic organization Human Life International, who accused Hannity of religious hypocrisy. Hannity spent very little time debating the actual concern for which Euteneur had criticized him and much more time bashing the reverend and the Catholic Church over other issues. Euteneuer was not a bit intimidated by the bullyboy bravado and said, at the end, that he’d deny Hannity communion. With video.
Rev. Euteneuer’s beef with Hannity was over his public apology for eating meat on a Friday of Lent while espousing birth control for those outside the faith. Euteneuer said, “One is simply obliged not to be a heretic in public.”
Frankly, I’m with Hannity on this one. Hannity said he supports birth control for people “outside the church” because he sees that as a preventive measure for unwanted pregnancies and, subsequently, abortions.
But Hannity quickly abandoned that topic and began haranguing Euteneuer over the priest sex scandals. “I don’t care that you’re judging me, Father… Why don’t you work on real important issues instead of superfluous issues? …Why don’t you work on corruption issues? …Why don’t you work on the sex scandals? …Are you perfect, Father?”
Attacking a clergyman and their shared church in the name of defending ones religious bona fides? There’s something wrong with that picture.
It’s a pity Euteneuer was so narrowly focused on that one area of Hannity's hypocrisy and ignored the broader picture which also includes his enthusiasm for the death penalty, the war in Iraq, widening the conflict to Iran and a very un-Christianlike attitude toward those with whom he disagrees.
