Enema of the week, #5

Reported by Chrish - February 26, 2007 -

Well, the general consensus here is that Oprah Winfrey screwed up BIG time by having FOX's Bill O'Reilly on her panel to discuss the issue of child molestation. Either Oprah's researchers failed to find the recent scandal involving O'Reilly's remarks about kidnap victim Shawn Hornbeck's release after four years:

"The situation here, for this kid, looks to me to be a lot more fun than what he had under his 'old' parents. He didn't have to go to school, he could run around and do whatever he wanted, ... And I think, when it all comes down, what's gonna happen is, there was an element here that this kid liked about his circumstances."

Ms. Winfrey was aware of both the remarks and the ensuing outrage (which caused a groundswell of bi-partisan angry letter-writing that prompted Lowe's to pull advertising from The Factor, AND convinced the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to uninvite him as keynote speaker at an event next month), yet decided that his championship of Jessica's Law was enough to override his gross lack of empathy and understanding of the impact of crimes on children.

Either way, we feel Ms. Winfrey made a big mistake.

It should be noted that unlike his October showing, which was announced 12 days before it aired, this visit was not made public until the day before it aired, disallowing viewers and listeners the opportunity to voice their opposition beforehand and perhaps convince the producers to cancel his appearance. There have been many, many comments on the Oprah Winfrey website that have expressed displeasure at her choice. Perhaps in the same manner that she revisited with James Frey, she could have O'Reilly on to explain exactly what he meant by those callous comments, and maybe even apologize to the Hornbeck family, who are deeply offended by his remarks.

Maybe this will help get her going!
