Bill O'Reilly Does Damage Control Before Oprah Appearance

Reported by Deborah - February 21, 2007 -

Now that Bill O'Reilly is scheduled to appear on Oprah,2/21/07, to discuss child predators, he tried to bolster his recently ruined reputation as media advocate for sexually abused children during tonight's TPM. It seems he figured that people would forget about his previous statements that Shawn Hornbeck liked his life with his kidnapper, if he came out tonight calling for Devlin's death and twisting his previous opinions to make himself look good.

After he announced he would be on Oprah with a panel discussing child predators and the law, he once again attacked Vermont, the Left, and the ACLU for siding with the predators. Then he brought up Shawn Hornbeck claiming that the theory that Hornbeck was a victim of Stockholm Syndrome was "bull because it was actually Child Sexual Abuse Accomodation Syndrome where the child is tortured into accepting his situation.

O'Reilly came off like he had always believed Hornbeck was a powerless victim which is not the case. On 1/16/07, he told psychologist Debra Mandel that he didn't believe in Stockholm Syndrome. Claiming to be an authority because he taught High School, BOR said Hornbeck had been lured by no school and a truck to drive. Mandels suggestion that the child had been brainwashed was tossed aside by O'Reilly who scoffed about Devlin, " He's a pizza delivery guy." At that point, CSAAS wasn't in the picture.

He had a lot more to say about Hornbeck during a segment with Greta where he made this now infamous comment.

"The situation that Hearst found herself in was exciting. She had a boring life, she was a child of privilege, all of a sudden she's in with a bunch of charismatic thugs, and she enjoyed it.

The situation here, for this kid, looks to me to be a lot more fun than what he had under his 'old' parents. He didn't have to go to school, he could run around and do whatever he wanted, ..."

On 1/24/07, Wendy Murphy introduced CSAAS to O'Reilly who refused to back down from his position about Hornbeck. O'Reilly had never heard of it before that night. Yet tonight he suggested that he had rejected Stockholm Syndrome because he knew all the time Hornbeck's behavior was consistant with CSAAS conveniently erasing the heartless and irresponsible comments he had made.

comment: There's a good chance that Oprah and the panel will already know about O'Reilly's recent disgrace. Not only did Lowes drop their advertising but the Center For Missing and Exploited children fired him as their speaker.

Even after all that O'Reilly refuses to apologize and has the guts to portray himself as the great defender of abused children. It's quite clear that O'Reilly knows very little about child psychology and his ignorance might be easier to understand if he had the guts to admit he was wrong. Will Oprah bring it up tomorrow?
