Shep Smith can't refrain from dig at Dixie Chicks

Reported by Chrish - February 12, 2007 -

On the "straight news" FOX Report tonight 2/12/07 host Shepard Smith inserted some editorializing when reporting the Dixie Chicks' sweep of the Grammy Awards last night: "...probably some politics involved in that." Later, he said "the only big news" out of (the Grammys) is The Police reunion, and did a lengthy segment on them.

This is a good example of how a piece, at first glance straightforward, promotes the agenda at FOX. First, Smith (or his producers - whatever) chose to highlight the Police, doing a little history of the band and showing extensive footage and snips, even though the Dixie Chicks were the big winners of the night.

But Smith's insinuation that the Dixie Chicks won because of politics is unfounded and dismissive of their incredible talent, recognized last night by their peers. Their album did what good art does - it reached people. Their lyrics are deeply personal and tell stories of pain, confusion, defiance, and righteousness, and also speak of the love and tenderness and caring that saw them through hard times. Natalie Maines alternately roars and croons as Marty Maguire and Emily Robison harmonize behind her and play some of the hottest licks around. These women are talented singers, songwriters, musicians, and performers who have prevailed against a major assault by the right-wing through sheer will.

This unforgiving attitude is not an admirable trait for the so-called family values crowd.
