"Special Report" Disseminates False Information on Oregon "Climatologist"

Reported by Janie - February 8, 2007 -

During last night's "Two Minutes of Hate" (AKA "Grapevine") segment, guest host Brian Wilson filed a report about a "state climatologist" that might "lose his title" because "he does not accept the theory that humans are the main cause of global climate change." Unfortunately for Brian, and Fox News all of this information is flat out incorrect.

Wilson "reported": "And the Oregon state climatologist may lose his title because he does not accept the theory that humans are the main cause of global climate change. A Portland TV station is reporting that Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski wants the title taken away from George Taylor — who insists natural cycles explain most of the planet's climate changes. Taylor is a climatologist with Oregon State University — which gave him the title of state climatologist.

The governor is seeking the authority to appoint his own climatologist — and says it's important to have one that agrees with the state's goals of reducing greenhouse gasses."

Unfortunately this report is almost completely false.

1. Oregon has no "state climatologist."

2. Taylor is not a climatologist. He is a meteorologist.

3. Taylor will not lose his job, or any income. According to ThinkProgress, "He will merely be stripped of his title, which he never earned but claims to retain. Gov. Kulongoski has the right to appoint a climatologist who is an expert in the field and adheres to the state’s climate policies."

Will Fox, "Special Report" and Wilson clarify these errors? We report, YOU decide!
