Enema of the Week

Reported by Chrish - January 28, 2007 -

News Hounds is pleased to announce a new feature. The Enema of the Week will be awarded to the FOX host or guest who is most full of, er, um, most in need.

The first honorific is awarded unanimously to Factor host Bill O'Reilly, for his shocking remarks about then-11-year-old kidnap victim Shawn Hornbeck, and his family:

"The situation that Hearst found herself in was exciting. She had a boring life, she was a child of privilege, all of a sudden she's in with a bunch of charismatic thugs, and she enjoyed it.

"The situation here, for this kid, looks to me to be a lot more fun than what he had under his 'old' parents. He didn't have to go to school, he could run around and do whatever he wanted, ...
And I think, when it all comes down, what's gonna happen is, there was an element here that this kid liked about his circumstances".

The backpedaling has been going on for two weeks now, with O'Reilly trying to rehabilitate himself as the champion of molested children. He has positioned himself as an expert on adolescent behavior and reiterated his speculation that Hornbeck's home life was somewhat to blame:

"After teaching teenagers in high school ('71-'73), it is hard for me to believe that a normal kid would stay in a horrible environment when escape was easy, especially if the child had confidence in his parents. "

He unwittingly reinforced his repugnant comments but promised he only had pure motives:

"... we're living in a dangerous time and children must be taught about evil and must be prepared to face it because they'll likely have to."

"I actually hope I'm wrong about Shawn Hornbeck. I hope he did not make a conscious decision to accept his captivity because Devlin made things easy for him. No school, play all day long.

But to just chalk this up to brainwashing and walk away is turn away from the true danger of child molesters and abductors. All American children must be taught survival skills, must be prepared to face crisis situations. That is the lesson of the Shawn Hornbeck story."

He has turned himself into a victim and misrepresented why people are incensed at him:

O'Reilly said that now the case has become "political." What?? Oh, yeah, the "far left smear websites" are "vilifying" him "for raising questions about the situation."

He denied that he speculated and insisted he only raised question:

"Can you point to one sentence that I said that placed blame on him?" (Hall said that he asked why didn't he escape when he could and she thinks he also said he might have enjoyed... ) "That's not blaming him, Jane. That's doing my job. My job is to be a journalist."

He tried to divert ire from his own crap to another show's crap, feigning outrage at Montel's psychic guest: "What if the Hornbecks were watching?" (They were in the audience and had asked the psychic about their son - and it's the Akers, not Hornbecks. Nice investigative journalism, idiot.)

He's allowed blame to be placed on political correctness and avoided responsibility:

(Geraldo Rivera speaking) "The firestorm that you ignited was not really about the Stockholm syndrome, the firestorm that you ignited was that you broke what has become one of the concrete precepts in political correctness - you may never question a victim or a victim's behavior."

O'Reilly overtalked "And I didn't mean to, by the way."

And then he had the audacity to complain that others were not making full apologies!

"They're obviously, I think, irresponsible, these people. But everybody makes mistakes. They might have acted emotionally. All they have to do is say 'y'know, maybe it was a mistake, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have jumped off like that, let's have a discussion about it. But they won't even do that!"
