Why Is FOX News Obsessed With The View?

Reported by Ellen - December 21, 2006 -

Hannity & Colmes spent the first half of their show tonight on the Rosie O’Donnell/Donald Trump dust-up. There were four guests and three segments devoted to – well, I never did get the point, other than to air the salacious sniping that went back and forth. It must not have hurt that the four guests were lovely-looking ladies, either. But between the Hannity & Colmes discussion, the one on FOX & Friends Marie Therese posted about, the eight minutes on Cavuto that Melanie emailed me about and the whatever-length segment Megyn Kendall (subbing for Greta Van Susteren) promo’d for the upcoming On The Record, it’s quite possible that FOX News spent more time talking about The View tonight than one could spend actually viewing The View today.

It’s not just Donald vs. Rosie, either. On Hannity & Colmes, alone, there have been discussions cum-bash-sessions about Joy Behar’s “Donald Rumsfeld” remark, Danny DeVito’s meltdown and Rosie O’Donnell’s “Chinese” imitation of DeVito’s meltdown. And, as Janie reported, FOXNews.com devoted an article to criticizing Behar’s softball questions to Senator Hillary Clinton.

Is The View such an important show that we need a nightly rundown of its highlights or lowlights on a national news network? Does FOX News have some financial stake in the show? Or is FNC just looking for a way to divert attention from some of the more serious issues facing the country which are not so flattering to the Bush administration, such as George Bush’s suggestion of a troop surge in Iraq, the Iraq Study Group’s report saying that the situation there is “grave and deteriorating” and the charges filed today against eight Marines (four charged with murder) regarding the Haditha massacre?

What do you think? All suggestions considered, so long as they are civil, respectful and on topic.
