FOX News’ Harris Faulkner Does Her Part To Rebut The NIE For The Bush Administration

Reported by Ellen - September 28, 2006 -

Once again, FOX News’ Harris Faulkner carried water for the Bush Administration. Last night, during a Hannity & Colmes news break, she whitewashed the torture bill. Tonight, she did her part to counter the damning revelations in the newly declassified sections of last spring's National Intelligence Estimate on global terrorism.

As the “War on Terror” graphic showed behind her, Faulkner reported in her chirpy voice, “Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says it’s IMPOSSIBLE (her emphasis) to know for sure whether the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have created more terrorists than they’ve killed. The comments following the information leaked from part of an intelligence report that suggests the Iraq war has bred more jihadists. Rumsfeld saying the value of intelligence reports can be uneven and sometimes they’re quote just flat wrong."

It's amazing that Faulkner could distort so many facts in so little time but she (or whoever writes the words she willingly recites) is turning into a pro. While the report was leaked, parts of it were also declassified and are now available online. Furthermore, the report doesn’t just "suggest" the Iraq war has bred more jihadists. It says “We assess that the Iraq jihad is shaping a new generation of terrorist leaders and operatives… We assess that the underlying factors fueling the spread of the movement outweigh its vulnerabilities and are likely to do so for the duration of the timeframe for this Estimate.” The report also says, “We judge that al-Qa’ida will continue to pose the greatest threat to the Homeland and US interests abroad by a single terrorist organization. We also assess that the global jihadist movement – which includes al-Qa’ida, affiliated and independent terrorist groups, and emerging networks and cells – is spreading and adapting to counterterrorism efforts.”

Also, while Faulkner was busy reporting Rumsfeld’s suggestion that the NIE was wrong, she overlooked a survey for the UN Security Council, also released this week which, as the San Jose Mercury News reported, “concluded the Iraq war has ‘provided many recruits and an excellent training ground’ for al-Qaida. It also said the war has increasingly exported deadly new tactics to Afghanistan.”
