Breaking News (Updated): FOX News Employees Have Been Released

Reported by Marie Therese - August 27, 2006 -

UPDATE TO EARLIER POST: Both Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig have been released from captivity. This is the latest news from Gaza. Earlier, Uma Pemaraju and Amy Kellogg, both very serious in their demeanor, reported that a new videotape of kidnapped both men had surfaced. The two men appeared to be in good health although their tape may have been made "under duress". While FOX News did not air the audio, Amy Kellogg explained that the men were reading in Arabic from a script, adding that they both claimed to have converted to Islam. Despite the fact that the 72-hour deadline given by the kidnappers had passed on Saturday, a spokesman for the Palestinian Authority expressed hope that the two men would be released soon. It would appear that negotiations have been successful and both men will soon rejoin their families. The relief on the faces of the FOX crew, including anchor Shepard Smith, was palpable.

From the beginning, it was apparent that the kidnappers were not affiliated with known Palestinian insurgent groups. There were many calls from the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, Fatah and others requesting that the two men be released.

Amy Kellogg reported that the latest videotape of their "conversion" may have been part of the deal that was been brokered for their release. Additionally, she dismissed the possibility of an Al Qaeda connection, suggesting that the men were taken to highlight a local Palestinian issue, not as part of a wider plot.

We News Hounds are delighted that both men have been released and that their ordeal is over.
