Kerry Vs. Lieberman

Reported by Janie - August 22, 2006 -

On "Special Report" last night (8/21) Brit Hume went after one of his favorite targets, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, during the "Two Minutes of Hate" (AKA "Grapevine") segment. This time, Hume was exaggerating Kerry's comments in order to support the new GOP golden boy, Joe Lieberman.

Under a banner reading "Gloves Are Off", Hume intoned:

"Most Senate Democrats are supporting liberal challenger Ned Lamont in the Connecticut Senate race, but avoiding attacks on colleague Joe Lieberman, who's now running as an independent.

But not John Kerry.

Kerry ripped Lieberman this weekend for 'making a Republican case' on the war in Iraq. Kerry told ABC's 'This Week' that Lieberman is 'out of step with the people of Connecticut,' saying, 'To adopt the rhetoric of Dick Cheney, who has been wrong about almost everything he has said about Iraq, shows you just exactly why he got in trouble.'

Lieberman called Kerry 'an old friend,' but dismissed his remarks as 'just plain politics by somebody who has ambitions of his own.'

Once again, Hume is not giving full quotes and is trying to spin Kerry's comments to make them appear hostile, angry, partisan and anti-administration. However, if we look at the actual comments made in the interview, you can see the vitriol was only added for effect by Hume.

``I am concerned that he is making a Republican case, and he is uttering almost the same words as Vice President Cheney, and I think it's inappropriate."

``The fact is, Joe Lieberman is out of step with the people of Connecticut and to adopt the rhetoric of Dick Cheney, who has been wrong about almost everything he has said about Iraq, shows you just exactly why he got in trouble with the Democrats there."

What Kerry said obviously did not constitute "ripping" Lieberman, but standing up for the Democratic party that voted against him in the primary. Hume, who apparently needed to edit Kerry's comments to create a point, used this 30-second snippet to support and protect the GOP friendly Lieberman, just as the Administration would want.

Good boy!
