Olbermann Fires Back After O'Reilly Tirade

Reported by Judy - August 3, 2006 -

Everyone who keeps track of the Keith Olbermann-Bill O'Reilly feud knew what was coming Thursday (August 3, 2006) after Fox News' O'Reilly ranted on his show about cable people enjoying other people's sufferings. Olbermann responded with another segment of "Factor Fiction."

Fans of MSNBC's "Countdown" show recognize "Factor Fiction" as a more-or-less regular segment in which Olbermann reads O'Reilly's words in a sinister voice and then translates them into "human." This time, Olbermann had to do double-duty since O'Reilly had a sidekick --Geraldo Rivera.

Olbermann managed to make fun of both of them -- and still poke fun at himself, by opening with a mock insistence that O'Reilly had attacked him "without any provocation," followed by three cases of memos being thrust into his hand from off-screen citing provocation. It could have been a disaster, but Olbermann's precise sense of timing helped him pull it off.

As usual, Factor Fiction had great writing. At one point, Olbermann said attacking O'Reilly and Rivera was like shooting fish in a barrel but they are "evil, un-American sharks with freaking laser beams on their heads fish."

Olbermann ends by turning O'Reilly's words about corporate news masters back on Fox News.
