O'Reilly gives middle finger to San Francisco, says "not part of the United States"

Reported by Chrish - June 20, 2006

Bill O'Reilly had Green Party candidate (US Senate - CA) Todd Chretien on The O'Reilly Factor tonight 6/19/06 to discuss the non-binding resolution passed by SF Board of Supervisors to provide some legal aid to immigrants who may be facing legal charges under proposed federal legislation. In the course of the discussion O'Reilly suggests that people planning a trip or convention will take the city's compassionate liberalism (my term - he called them "radical stances") into consideration and opt for another city - say, Las Vegas, where nice, law-abiding people go to drink, gamble, ogle women, and maybe have a quickie.

Candidate Chretien pooh-poohed that idea, digging at O'Reilly saying "Well, Bill, you forget what an incredible tourist attraction Coit Tower is." O'Reilly chuckled and said "You mean Coit Tower that's going to be seized by Al Queda? Heh heh heh... and you guys aren't going to be able to do anything about it? heh, heh, heh."

Chretien was referring to O'Reilly's outrageous statement from last November 8,

"And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."

At the time O'Reilly tried to diminish his call for mass murder of fellow Americans with whom he disagrees by characterizing it as "satire". Six months later he's disowned it completely and toned the rhetoric down quite a bit.

The gist of the discussion, briefly, was that Chretien believes San Francisco is taking a moral stance that people who work to take care of their families deserve to be treated with dignity. O'Reilly refuted that by citing "every single poll," which say the opposite of Chretien: that the vast majority of Americans want the borders closeded and and no amnesty for illegal immigrants.

San Francisco is "demonized" yet again, as "defying state and federal law on issues like gay marriage, military recruiting, gun ownership, and now illegal immigration," all issues near and dear the Factor viewership hearts. O'Reilly characterizes the supervisors as "giving the middle finger to people they disagree with politically." Coupled with his scenarios that people will choose Vegas (lol) and Disneyland over the City by the Bay, it sounds like O'Reilly is planting the seeds for another of his famous boycotts (France, Aruba, Vermont, Exxon/Mobil...)

O'Reilly goes even further with the anti-San Fran talk, saying that "there comes a point where San Francisco either uncouples from the US, which I think it has, or it comes back to reality and says 'we're going to be part of the United States of America', and right now you're not."

Chretien adamantly says that San Francisco is part of the US and, barring a major earthquake, they will continue to be part of it. He says the reality of this country is that there have always been unjust laws - slavery, women barred from voting - and there have always been people who stood up first, and San Francisco finds a large echo throughout the country to protect immigrants' rights.

This is classic O'Reilly and why FOX keeps him on the payroll - while superficially factual it is all designed to give him an editorial platform to further the right-wing agenda and divide the country. If anyone gives the middle finger to people he disagrees with politically, it's Bill O'Reilly.
