Liars are Patriots on Fox News

Reported by Melanie - June 19, 2006

On June 15, 2006, the London Daily Telegraph published an interview with the Dixie Chicks titled, "How the Dixie Chicks Survived their Scrap with Bush." In it, the Chicks discussed what life has been like since March, 2003 when Natalie Maines expressed shame that George Bush was from her home state of Texas.

In the article, Emily Robison is quoted as saying, "It was the bullying and the scare factor. It was like the McCarthy days, and it was almost like the country was unrecognisable." She said, "A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism."

Maines added, "The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country… I don't see why people care about patriotism."

As we know by now, according to the radical right, all of us are expected to unquestioningly revere everything about our country except, of course, poor black citizens, gay citizens, citizens who think the war in Iraq was and is a mistake, citizens who favor choice, citizens who don't think our government should preach to us from a pulpit, citizens with the first name of Jose and the last name of Martinez, and the Dixie Chicks, to name but a few. So what Robison and Maines said is causing them to get their "patriotic" hackles up and, as always, Fox News is at their beck and call, ready to help spread their particular brand of "patriotism."

Responding to that call, Neil Cavuto hosted a segment today (June 19, 2006) titled, "Dixie Chicks Mock Americans Who are 'Patriotic'." Cavuto's guests were two California radio talk show hosts, progressive Bernie Ward and radical right wing sentry Paul McGuire. Early on, McGuire said:

I think the Dixie Chicks are expanding to new country markets. You know, Osama bin Laden lives up in the mountains in the country. I hear he's a big fan of the Dixie Chicks, so they've got the Al Qaeda market cornered.

McGuire knows no such thing and of course Cavuto didn't laugh him off the air or ask for details. (But hey, just in case, the FBI, the CIA, the NSA, and the Department of Homeland Security should interview McGuire ASAP. Based on what he said this afternoon alone they're probably tapping his phone and reading his email. After all, whoever whispered in his ear that bin Laden is a "big fan" of the Dixie Chicks just might know where he's hiding too!) Oh how far we've come under the "leadership" of the "compassionate conservatives." The liars are the new "patriots."
