O'Reilly: Hey, Gibson's not the only one fearing a racial power shift

Reported by Chrish - May 18, 2006

In Bill O'Reilly's Talking Point Memo yesterday 5/16/06 he railed against the New York Times and "other lefty zealots" who want to change the "white power structure that controls America."

The sentence from the NYT that sparked O'Reilly's rant was

"The president's plan to deploy up to 6,000 National Guard troops to free the Border Patrol to hunt illegal immigrants is a model of stark simplicity, one sure to hearten the Minuteman vigilantes, frightened conspiracy theorists, English-only Latinophobes, right-wing radio and TV personalities, and members of Congress who have no patience for sorting out the various mixed blessings that surging immigration has given this country."

Which in O'Reilly-speak is "... if you support securing the borders, you are either a vigilante, some kind of phobe, or a right-wing whack job media person."

A more reasoned interpretation might be that the far-right which O'Reilly personifies and their incompetent representatives in DC are not willing to take a little more time for a workable long-term solution to the illegal immigration problemS. It's a quick fix, will make some great video, and it won't solve anything. A start without an exit plan - where have we seen this before?

O'Reilly continued: "But a funny thing happened on the way to that editorial. A CNN snap* poll says 75 percent of Americans support putting the Guard on the border. That's a lot of phobes."

Two things about that "snap" poll: first, he said it and it appeared on screen, but it has been edited out of the FOXNews.com article linked above. Second, a "snap" poll is unscientific and essentially meaningless. I found the poll he referred to at NY1 News:

NY1 News has launched our "Snap Poll" feature, which allows Time Warner Digital Cable subscribers in New York City to use their remote control to answer poll questions that appear on their TV screen. If you don't have Time Warner Digital Cable - or you just prefer to use the web - cast your vote in today's poll here:

Absolutely useless number, but since it supports his position he'll use it.

But the real revelation in this TPM was O'Reilly's casual acknowledgment of and support for the status quo, which favors him:

"According to the lefty zealots, the white Christians who hold power must be swept out by a new multicultural tie, a rainbow coalition, if you will. This can only happen if demographics change in America.

An open border policy and the legalization of millions of Hispanic illegal aliens would deeply affect the political landscape in America. That's what The New York Times and many others on the left want. They might get it." (said ominously.)

As Media Matters has noted, Bill O'Reilly is deeply afraid of the "browning of America", which would wipe out the culture of white privelege.

If the shoe fits....
