O'Reilly: NEWS or Infotainment?

Reported by Chrish - May 7, 2006

Most independent thinkers agree that The Factor, like much of the pap on FOX, is thinly disguised propaganda. As Howard Dean put it, "My view is that Fox News is a propaganda outlet of the Republican Party..."

Most supporters of FOX and particularly Bill O'Reilly call him straight forward and a necessary "balance" to the so-called liberal (HA!) media, and they turn to him for news. When we folks call him on his bias or incomplete reporting we get feedback saying things like ths recent comment:

"I've said this for such a long time. These shows that people here are so critical of are talk shows. This is not the news. SO why get all upset over the way Hannity and BOR's take is on the news?" Posted by: Ranger Bob at May 6, 2006 09:23 PM

After watching the program which was the subject of that post, I had to reply:

No shit, pardon my language. But

From billoreilly.com:
"Now in its tenth year on the air, "The O'Reilly Factor" on the Fox News Channel remains the DOMINANT NUMBER ONE NEWS PROGRAM in the USA. In fact, it has been the highest rated broadcast for more than 200 straight weeks! Blending news analysis with investigative reporting, "The Factor" has gained international prominence as well..."

They CLAIM to be news, not a talk show. Larry King has a talk show.

From FOXNews.com:
"Bill O'Reilly joined FOX NEWS Channel as the ANCHOR and host of The O'Reilly Factor in 1996."

"... Bill O'Reilly has risen to become "the new pope of TV JOURNALISM" according to..."

In 2000, The Factor...passed Larry King Live to become the number one cable NEWS program in the United States."

ad nauseum

THEY tout him as a journalist and newsman. When FOX freely and openly admits that what Bill O'Reilly does is infotainment and The Factor is not a NEWS program then we'll talk.

Here is the final piece of evidence, grabbed from that same hour, that O'Reilly's show is touted as NEWS; all the back-pedalling and claims of satire and jesting and analysis are just excuses when they get called out for unprofessionalism, bias, smears, demagoguery, posturing, and oh yeah, lying.

I know it's not news. The rest of the 'Hounds know it's not news. Most of our readers know it's not news. 294,000,000 Americans know it's not news. When THEY quit calling it "NEWS", we'll stop calling them on it. Until then, we remain, faithfully yours...
