New York Post Gossip Columnist Accused of Shaking Down Billionaire

In a law enforcement sting operation, Jared Paul Stern, editor of the New York Post's Page Six Magazine, was arrested for attempting to extort $220,000 from billionaire Ron Burkle, managing partner of Yucaipa Companies, a "conglomerate with interested in supermarkets, celebrity clothing lines and media." (N. Y. Daily News, 4-7-06) In return for the money Stern allegedly promised to "protect" Mr. Burkle for a year against "inaccurate and unflattering items about him in the gossip page."
