Bush Hides Fact that Afghan Man Facing Execution is a Christian
Reported by Melanie - March 23, 2006
On Wednesday (March 22, 2006), Fox aired live coverage of George Bush's Wheeling, West Virginia speech. In that speech, Bush comment on the Afghan man who has been imprisoned for converting from Islam to Christianity and who faces execution if he refuses to become a Muslim again.
Here's what Bush said:
It is deeply troubling that a country we helped liberate would hold a person to account because they chose a particular religion over another.
Comment: It immediately leapt out at me that Bush didn't use the word "Christian" or "Christianity." It seems far more natural to me that "straight talker" Bush, a born-again Christian who claims God speaks directly to him, would say the man is being held "to account because [he's] a Christian" instead of he's being held "to account because [he] chose a particular religion over another." Then again, I'm sure Bush and his handlers would prefer we not know people in Afghanistan face execution for being or becoming Christians. After all, we're sacrificing the lives of our kids and spending billions of our tax dollars to "bring democracy" to that country so talk of executing Christians -- ("Bush's base" - they'd be furious!) -- puts the Big Lie to that scenario.
My colleague Judy has some thoughts on this too.
