Racial Faux pas on Fox Big Story

Reported by Chrish - March 2, 2006

In a painfully insensitive segment on The Big Story today 3/2/06, the lovely and dark Uma Pemmaraju read an "other headline" snippet at the bottom of the hour with the graphic "Blonde Ambition?" and a caveman behind her.

Mustering her dignity, Pemmaraju read:

"Well blondes apparently had more fun in the Ice Age as well. A study in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior looking into why blonde hair and blue eyes are so common in northern Europe finds that since there was a man shortage 10,000 years ago, men had their pick of women. So blonde hair and blue eyes are common because cavemen must have preferred those blondes. I don't know about that, John, (said with a toss of her head) but there you have it. Some facts you can use there."

Comment: With a whole stable of blonde newsreaders available and a truly not-newsworthy fluff item like this, one has to wonder what the point was at all. I am pretty thick-skinned to insensitivity and rudeness but this made me cringe. To his credit, even John Gibson seemed embarrassed and uncomfortable. What were the producers thinking??
