Fox - We Don't Search Most Of The Containers Anyway, So Does It Even Matter Who Runs The Ports?

Reported by Donna - February 22, 2006

Just when you think that Fox can't toe the President's line any more, they come up with a new one. Shepard Smith gave an opening statement on one of his segments that had me completely staring at the screen in disbelief.

Here's what he had to say, "Political firestorm ready over the pending sale of the company that manages six major U.S. ports, the United Arab Emirates. The company is not changing, it's being sold by a British company to a company in the the United Arab Emirates. (Comment: What? The company is not changing, it's being sold? Isn't that a change?)

Critics say that puts the country at risk. Many of whom know absolutely nothing about the subject. (Comment: Like our president, Smith? He didn't know about it until it was after it was a done deal, then he got a 'rally around the deal' briefing and all of a sudden he's 100% for it? Or are you talking about all the Republican Congressmen/women and Senators who oppose the president on this issue? I really would have liked some examples.)

And the White House says that all the due diligence has been done (Comment: Isn't this kind of similar to 'we have good intelligence that Iraq has Weapons of Mass Destruction, nuclear capability, the ability to strike the U.S. and they are an imminent threat?') but with only 6% (Comment: Yesterday Smith said it was 2 to 4%) of shipping containers that come into this country physically searched by Homeland Security, does it even matter who runs the ports? (My emphasis)

Comments: This reminds me of the old saying 'You don't throw out the baby with the bath water.' Well, since we're only checking 6% of the packages, why not Cuba? Venezuela? China? Turkey? Jordan? France? Why don't we let North Korea do it? How about Disney World? Or maybe one of those defense/security contractors in Iraq that were started by former White House staffers? According to Fox, "Does it even matter?"

I totally don't understand this rationale. We're horrible at Homeland Security when it comes to our ports (apparently little has changed in the 4 1/2 years since 9/11), so let's not worry about who is going to manage them?

All this story does is spell out more failures for the Bush Administration. Not only haven't we improved port security (which the Democrats have been beating on since 9/11) but we still don't check cargo packages on our passenger planes (another Democratic issue). The question is -- why haven't any steps been taken since 9/11? Do people really not care? And the 'trust me' angle? That reminds me of the old poster of Richard Nixon that said, 'Would you buy a used car from this man?'
