Bloviate With Bill Contestant # 4

Reported by Deborah - February 19, 2006

Dan Gavigan, Long Island, New York, chose to defend the organization that O'Reilly detests , the ACLU. This brave guy did an outstanding job and Gavigan's strong belief in the mission of the ACLU not only gave him strength, it communicated his respect for our constitution. If O'Reilly hadn't been on his best behavior, Gavigan might have experienced those nasty debate behaviors so often seen on The Factor.

O'Reilly greeted Gavigan with a chummy question, " What's a nice Long Island boy doing defending the ACLU...?" Gavigan opened with a direct shot, " Bill, you can't possibly think you're an objective journalist if you think that," Although the friendly smile changed to pursed lips, O'Reilly stayed cool.

After Gavigan praised the ACLU, he immediatly gave an example of a young girl the organization defended because her school would not permit her to sing a song called Awesome God. Gavigan claimed that the ACLU was not secular if they did that. O'Reilly's response was weak at best saying that all they did was say the girl had the right to sing the song and " file a little brief". Then he added that they do that to make people believe they're looking out for them.

O'Reilly then asked why the ACLU has challenged everything the Bush Administratioin has proposed to keep us safe against terrorists. Gavigan accused the administration of fear mongering to force people to give up their freedoms. When asked about the Patriot Act, Gavigan let O'Reilly know he had read it by referring to a specific section by number. O'Reilly tried to get Gavigan by bringing up the magic word, terrorists, which usually takes people off balance. Gavigan replied, " The great thing about this country is that we respect everyone, even people who want to kill us."

Unfortunatly, there is no transcript of Gavigan and O'Reilly on the Fox News website even though the first three have both transcripts and videos. Check out the video. It will make you wonder what the uncut version might reveal
