Cavuto Suddenly Worries About "Your Tax Dollars" (Those Spent on the Wiretap Hearings, That Is)

Reported by Melanie - February 6, 2006

I've monitored Your World w/Neil Cavuto for a year and a half. During that time I have never heard a discussion about the cost of the Iraq war. I have never heard anything about the millions missing from the Iraq reconstruction fund. Last week, when George Bush asked for a "quick infusion" of $70 billion for the Iraq war, I didn't hear a word. I didn't hear any discussion today (February 6, 2006) about the $2.77 trillion dollar budget proposal the Bush administration released this morning. But one thing I did hear was Neil Cavuto expressing concern about "your tax dollars," as they relate to the wiretap hearings, that is.

Cavuto opened his show with: "This is a Fox News Alert. The NSA wiretaps are legal. That is the testimony from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales today during a very public senate hearing on what was supposed to be a very secret program to protect this nation. Are these hearings, which your tax dollars are paying for by the way, themselves putting America's security at risk?"

Next came a segment featuring "Former CIA Operative" Wayne Simmons and P.J. Crowley of the Center for American Progress. Simmons argued on behalf of Cavuto and Fox, repeatedly accusing "the left" of holding the hearings which he said were a "waste of time." "Taxpayers have better things to spend their money on," he said. Crowley made a valiant effort to point out that the hearings showed the world that we're "functioning in a rule of law," and that "we have to make sure we have a legal foundation" for the wiretaps.

Never one to stray from the propaganda message of the day, today's being that "the left" is wasting your tax dollars on the wiretap hearings which, according to Simmons, "the President has absolute authority to conduct," Cavuto went to a break after the second segment. The screen filled with a graphic urging Cavuto's viewers to vote in an online poll: Are the NSA wiretapping hearings a good use of your tax dollars?

If you hear Neil Cavuto express his concern for how "your tax dollars" are being spent, don't be fooled. He doesn't care about you. I guarantee that when he expresses that specious concern about your money he does it only to calculatingly blast someone the Bush administration doesn't like - most likely Democrats. (Given the poll results, the Bushies - and Cavuto - might be grasping at straws, at least on this line of bull.)
