The SOTU Address Must Have Been Bad - Cavuto Emphasizes Alito & Roberts Instead

Reported by Melanie - February 1, 2006

When Fox News is diverting attention away from the State of the Union address by 4:00 p.m. the following day, you know the reviews haven't been good. Such was the case today (February 1, 2006). Immediately after Your World w/Neil Cavuto began, Cavuto launched what would be a 37-minute promotion of George Bush Our Tenacious and Successful Leader - tenacious and successful because he got two new justices appointed to the Supreme Court despite "opposition to both."

It all began with a FOX NEWS ALERT and a live shot of the White House East Room. Cavuto teased with: "The Alito confirmation seen as a major victory for President Bush. It was front and center with Alito attending last night's State of the Union address. The President not actually behaving like a leader with low approval ratings. After all, he's gotten through two Supreme Court justices with approval ratings in the high 30s to low 40s, depending on the poll."

Fox continued to show the East Room in a split-screen live shot during the first segment. Heading to a break afterward, Cavuto stirred the pot some more: President Bush "is going to do this ceremonial swearing-in for Sam Alito and John Roberts is going to be doing the honors, which is kinda cool. Which is kinda next."

After the break there was another FOX NEWS ALERT and Cavuto said, "OK. You're looking live at the East Room of the White House. This is a ceremonial event but it's a big deal. It's a ceremony, already Justice Samuel Alito has cast his first vote today on the Supreme Court. Nevertheless this ceremonial event will involve John Roberts, the Chief Justice swearing him in, the President of the United States on hand. All those gentlemen are expected to make remarks before and after all of this so it's kind of a neat thing. And the President who had, you know, pretty tough approval ratings, managed to get two justices through the court, or through congress, when there was a lot of initial opposition to both, certainly to Alito. We're going to take you there, live, when it begins."

A few minutes later, there was more hype from Cavuto: "We are looking at the East Room of the White House where the President of the United States in going to have Sam Alito in tow and John Roberts. Two men he raised to the Supreme Court. John Roberts is going to do the ceremonial swearing-in. Sam Alito is expected to talk to people as well. Could be very interesting drama in the East Room of the White House. We'll be there."

The ceremony finally began at 4:23 p.m. ET and it lasted for 13 minutes. When it was over, Cavuto said Alito thanked a lot of people and is "walking out with the man who appointed him to his high position, the President of the United States... The President, of course, wanted to do it up big with the Chief Justice there, John Roberts."

Comment: As I said at the beginning, you know Bush's State of the Union address bombed if Fox News is changing the subject - Alito, Roberts, Roberts, Alito - less than 24 hours after it was delivered.
