Will Dayside Backpedal?

Reported by Janie - January 26, 2006

Fox Military Analyst, Bill Cowan, appeared on Dayside yesterday to discuss the secret Pentagon report discovered by the AP surmising the state of the United States military, which lent support to Rep. John Murtha's assessment that the military is breaking down, and may not be able to sustain troop levels to fight the insurgency in Iraq.

During the brief segment at the beginning of the show, co-host Mike Jerrick began by clarifying that the report was commissioned by the Pentagon itself, to which Cowan responded, "Yeah, they did. The guy that did the study is well known, well respected in this town, so I think they're going to look at what he had to say very carefully."

The hosts of Dayside declared that Rumsfeld would be giving a press conference later in the day to address this report, which they cut to about half way through the show, and played in its entirety. During the press briefing, Rumsfeld had this to say about the report: ''It's clear that those comments do not reflect the current situation. They are either out of date or just misdirected.''

Rumsfeld's comments are in direct conflict with both the report (which was commissioned by his own Pentagon) and the assessment made by Fox's own military analyst.

It will be interesting to see if Dayside chooses to backpedal on their stance on this report, now that the administration has made its own stance clear.
