FOX still plugging away for Shadegg

Reported by Chrish - January 25, 2006

On Special Report with Brit Hume yesterday 1/24/06, 3-4 minutes were devoted to the race for the House Majority Leadership post vacated by ethically-challenged Tom DeLay. It was yet another promotional spot for AZ Representative John Shadegg, previously annointed by Bill Kristol on Fox News Sunday January 8th. It is interesting to note that 5 days after Kristol named Shadegg as a possibility Shadegg announced he was in contention January 13th.

(In addition to the above-referenced debut on FNS, Shadegg was introduced to the stay-at-home crowd on Fox News Live the following Monday the 16th, after appearing with Boehner and Blunt on Fox News Sunday the previous day.)

Representatives Blunt (MO) and Boehner(OH) were mentioned as leaders in the contest, but, we're told, there's a "dark horse" coming up behind them in Rep. Shadegg. His supporters are not discouraged, and with a secret ballot being cast for Leader there are many who may say one thing and do another. The segment was mainly focused on Shadegg, with two (maybe three? I do not have the segment recorded, drat) video clips of him speaking. It was reiterated that he, unlike the other two contenders, is not tainted by lobbying scandal.

Comment; While the other candidates were mentioned this piece was clearly meant to familiarize viewers with one man above the others. There have been at least three (that I've seen) segments that could only be described as promotional. Informative, yes, but promoting one above the others, the definition of propaganda.
