25,000 to 35,000 People Losing Their Jobs? No Big Deal On Fox - The Dow Is Up!
Reported by Donna - January 23, 2006
In a short episode on Studio B with Jane Skinner filling in for Shepard Smith, Senior Business Correspondent, Brenda Buttner, reported on the devastating news that 25,000 to 35,000 people were going to lose their jobs at Ford Motor Company.
Bad news? You would think, but not if you listened to Fox.
Brenda Buttner showed no empathy for the loss of 10's of thousands of jobs and instead announced that "Ford's stock was up after the restructuring, was receiving a smooth ride on Wall Street" and "Ford's earnings report showed 4th quarters profit exceeding expectations."
With a nonchalant attitude she said it was a "nice bounceback after Fridays stunning selloff that sent the Dow south by more than 200 points."
Comment: While she was reporting all this good news the banner at the bottom of the screen read, '25,000 to 35,000 Ford Employees Could Lose Their Jobs'. That didn't seem important to Fox though, it seemed more important to announce that the Dow was recovering and Ford's 4th quarter earnings report exceeded expectations! I keep trying to get comfortable with this new world order of corporations over the individual, but I can't seem to come to terms with it.
