Grapevine Whine - Still Boosting Arnie, Still Getting It Wrong

Reported by Nancy - December 28, 2005 -

Less than a week ago, Brit Hume used one of the "pickings" on his Grapevine segment of Special Report to spin the story about CA Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger's silly little dust-up with his hometown, in an effort to make The Governator look like a big, strong tough guy compared to those Austrian wimps. But Hume had to twist the story, as I previously noted, getting the timeline wrong in order to draw that picture. Last night (12/27), "picking" #2 on the Grapevine repeated the error.

Here's "picking" #2:

Officials in CA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Austrian hometown have removed his name from the town's soccer stadium & deleted any reference to their most famous native son on the city's Web sites. This after Schwarzenegger barred the town from using his name in a promotional capacity in response to local politicians, who denounced him for denying clemency to convicted murderer Stanley "Tookie" Williams, executed earlier this month. But Graz Mayor Siegfried Nagl says most residents still admire Schwarzenegger & he wrote to the governor, saying he hopes he will soon hear Schwarzenegger say to his old hometown, "I'll be back."

Comments: The correct timeline is
1) the Graz city council, like many others around the world, wanted Arnie to grant clemency to Tookie Williams;
2) when that didn't happen, the Graz city council voted to remove Arnie's name from the stadium; then
3) Arnie reacted like a spoiled brat & told the city of Graz they couldn't use his name any more.

Why does the reactionary noise machine care so much about this? Why do they persist in getting the timeline wrong? Is it the bloodlust of the death penalty? Or can they not bear the idea that someone, somewhere, doesn't worship their idol?

If you'd like to complain to Fox about this, email: special@foxnews.com

NOTE TO READERS: Please stay on topic (Special Report shilling for Arnie & continuing the get it wrong). O/T comments will be deleted. Thanks.

ADDENDUM 010306

My original TIMELINE, based on reporting available at the time:
12/13 - Schwarzenegger refuses clemency, Tookie Williams executed
12/15 - Green & Socialist members of Graz City Council propose to remove Schwarzenegger's name from local stadium
12/16 - Graz City Council votes to remove Schwarzenegger's name from local stadium
12/19 - Schwarzennegger writes to Graz City Council, tells them to stop using his name
12/20 - Mayor writes to Schwarzenegger trying to smooth things over
12/26 - Schwarzenegger's name removed from stadium

I have subsequently been made aware that the VOTE by the Graz city council did not occur until *after* Schwarzenegger's letter, as evidenced by reports like this from the NYT on Dec 27:

"I submitted a petition to the City Council to remove his name from the stadium, and to take away his status as an honorary citizen," Sigrid Binder, the leader of the Green Party, said in a recent interview. "The petition was accepted by a majority on the council."

Before a formal vote was taken on the petition, however, Mr. Schwarzenegger made a kind of pre-emptive strike, writing a letter to Siegfried Nagl, the town's conservative mayor, withdrawing Graz's right to use his name in association with the stadium.

So a corrected TIMELINE should be:
12/13 - Schwarzenegger refuses clemency, Tookie Williams executed
12/15 - Green & Socialist members of Graz City Council propose to remove Schwarzenegger's name from local stadium
12/16 - Graz City Council "accepts petition" to remove Schwarzenegger's name from local stadium
12/19 - Schwarzennegger writes to Graz City Council, tells them to stop using his name
12/20 - Mayor writes to Schwarzenegger trying to smooth things over
? date unclear - Graz City Council votes to remove Schwarzenegger's name from local stadium
12/26 - Schwarzenegger's name removed from stadium

Apologies for the confusion, & I *still* think Arnold acted like a spoiled brat :)
