Ho, ho, ho, boys and girls! On FOX News Channel, Santa's a Republican!

Reported by Marie Therese - December 23, 2005

On this morning's FOX & Friends 1st, hosts Brian Kilmeade and Alisyn Camerota interviewed a personage billed only as "The White House Santa." This Santa, however, proved to be a partisan and broke the sacred Christmas tradition that Santa Claus is a magical fellow whose only interest is bringing joy to the faces of children at Christmas time. Santa loves ALL children everywhere, not only Republican children with families that support George Bush.

For a channel like FOX that claims to respect Christmas traditions, this is utter hypocrisy.

If "Santa" had made this kind of statement on the Howard Stern Show or the Daily Show or even during Saturday Night Live, I would not have objected, because, unlike FOX News, they haven't made a HUGE deal out of respecting Christmas traditions. Besides those shows are aired at times when most little ones are in bed.

Santa is and always has been non-partisan. In fact he's apolitical. "The White House Santa" should have kept his mouth shut this morning. Instead, he dishonored the whole concept of Santa Claus, bringing it down to the level of party politics.

Maybe that's OK when he's being wined and dined at White House parties, surrounded by Republicans.

Maybe that's OK when he's conversing with FNC employees in the green room, surrounded by Republicans.

However, in my opinion, it is definitely NOT appropriate behavior for any Santa on daytime TV, which is generally billed as family-friendly, to link himself to a particular political party.

FOX & Friends' hosts should have called him on it. Instead they played along in their usual cutesey style.

As far as I'm concerned, "The White House Santa" and FOX News Channel owe an apology to all children in the United States and throughout the world whose parents are not Republican!

In this season of giving, let's just leave Santa Claus out of party politics and let him do what he does best - make children happy!

But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to ALL, and to ALL a good-night!"

The name of the female co-host was amended to Alisyn Camerota.

A partial transcript of the interview has been added below.

WHITE HOUSE SANTA: ... I've seen him [the President] age, but this year I thought he looked better than he has looked in the last two years.

KILMEADE: 'Cause he said that, during the election season, he actually put on weight. He wasn't workin' out as much and plus he twisted his knee.

WH SANTA: Well, he's very strong. His upper body. He rides ...

KILMEADE: Did you take a run at him?

WH SANTA: Let me tell you, Brian, exactly what happened. (laughter on set) I walked in and we embraced and I said "My kinda guy!"

KILMEADE: He hugged you?

WH SANTA: Yes, he did. And I hugged him back.

WH SANTA: And then Mrs. Bush appeared - and she's beautiful ...

WH SANTA: ... she is so lovely. And then we hugged. And I said "This is like a family reunion." And then Mrs. Bush's mother was there and so she hugged and then the next thing is the dogs were scampering about, so I was down on the floor with Barney and Miss Beazley.

KILMEADE (speaks at same time as Griffin): They have their own way of hugging.

ALISYN CAMEROTA: It's just a love fest. It's a big love fest.

WH SANTA: Well, the dogs, they, they - you know, they're beautiful. They're beautiful dogs.

CAMEROTA: And so can you answer the age-old question, Santa, of whether or not Santa Claus is a Democrat or a Republican?

WH SANTA: That is up to the individual, my dear.

WH SANTA: This Santa Claus has his preference.

KILMEADE: Which is?

WH SANTA: Republican.

KILMEADE: You're a Republican?

WH SANTA: Yes, I am. (points to his chest) Do you see all these medals pinned on this coat?

KILMEADE: Congratulations.

WH SANTA: That's called courage, my friend.

KILMEADE: Absolutely.

WH SANTA: You earn this.

KILMEADE: Understood.

WH SANTA: And when you're 227 years old, it's taken a while to get there.

KILMEADE: Absolutely.

CAMEROTA: You don't look a day over 200!
