Grapevine Whine - Arnie Gets a Boost from Brit

Reported by Nancy - December 21, 2005 -

Never one to miss an opportunity to bash or praise multiple targets, Brit Hume used "picking" #3 on his Grapevine segment of Special Report on Tuesday night (12/20) to prolong the controversy over the execution of Tookie Williams, smear Williams again, & sneer at yet another European country. Of course he had to omit one significant detail in order to spin the story in Schwarzenegger's favor, but when has that ever stopped anyone at Fox?

Here's how Hume read "picking" #3:

CA Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has told his Austrian hometown to stop using his name to promote the city, after local politicians protested Schwarzenegger's decision to deny clemency to death row inmate Stanley "Tookie" Williams. The former gang member, who was convicted of 4 brutal murders, was executed last week, prompting officials in the city of Graz to launch a petition drive to rename Schwarzenegger Stadium. In a letter to the city council, the Republican governor says, "In order to spare the responsible politicians of the city of Graz further concern, I withdraw from them the right to use my name."

Comments: Hume was certainly efficient. In his trademark smug tone of voice, he told viewers:
*Good: Arnie, death penalty, executions, Republican governor
*Bad: local politicians, protests, clemency, Tookie, gang members, brutal murders, death penatly opponents, Austria, Graz

Isn't "brutal murder" a tad redundant? Maybe 2 tads?

More importantly, other sources are reporting a different story.

The LA Times reports:

Schwarzenegger was preempting a move by the Graz City Council to strip his name from the facility in protest of the recent execution of Stanley Tookie Williams. The governor's refusal to commute Williams' sentence provoked an outcry across Europe, including the governor's homeland.

Most US-based news orgs are at least including that little detail -- that first the Graz City Council voted to remove his name from the stadium, & then his response was to tell them to stop using his name -- but non-US news media are headlining it:

The Cape Times (South Africa): Graz terminates Schwarzenegger connection

The Globe & Mail:Terminator's image suffers in homeland

The Sydney Morning Herald: Arnie's terminated

The Guardian: Schwarzenegger Faces 'Tookie' Backlash in Austria

NOTE TO READERS: Please stay on topic (anything related to this particular "pickin", including Hume's spinning the story in Arnie's favor). O/T comments will be deleted. Thanks.
