Iraqi Troop Readiness - Same Old Same Old From Rumsfeld

Reported by Donna - November 29, 2005

Today on Studio B with Shepard Smith he went to a report from Bret Baier at the Pentagon who spoke about Iraqi troop readiness, again. We've all heard Rumsfeld speak aboout Iraqi troop readiness before. Last year he vacillated from saying it was classified to saying that 10's of thousands were equipped and trained. This past February it was stated that 60,000 Iraqi police were trained and ready as were 75,000 Iraqi security forces.

We were all shocked when the top American Commander told the Senate that while they said 3 Iraqi battalions were ready in June, at the end of September that number was now one. (Keep in mind that one battalion is usually between 500 - 700 troops) But within 2 months we have Rumsfeld pounding his fist on the podium and giving us new numbers.

Rumsfeld said that 95 battalions were now equipped and trained. He said that made 50,000 out of 212,000 troops ready for combat.

Comment: Bret Baier reads these Pentagon statements as if they come directly from the Pentagon. Fox presents the words of Donald Rumsfeld as the truth but doesn't look for context. Are these 95 battalions ready to go out on their own? How did they get 94 more battalions equipped and trained in two months? How does Rumsfeld explain these numbers with the numbers from our American Commander and top Generals in Iraq - of one battalion ready in September?

Sure, it's nice and easy to put the story out there as the Pentagon would have scripted it, but after all that's happened, don' t you think most Americans would like the hard questions asked?
