40 Minutes of Hype for King George

Reported by Melanie - November 29, 2005

This is a diary of how Fox, and Fox's Neil Cavuto, hyped George Bush in the 40 minutes prior to the "major" speech on immigration Bush gave in Tucson, Arizona on Monday (November 28, 2005).

Cavuto: We're "just minutes away from the start of what could be a make-or-break week of speeches by President Bush." He's "hanging tough but is his presidency hanging in the balance because he's too stubborn?"

Cavuto: As we were "getting into this whole wuss [referring to previous segment] argument," the President of the United States is "arriving to prove that he is not [a wuss] when it comes to dealing with illegal immigrants and later this week on the Iraq war itself. This is a week of crucial speeches on the Commander in Chief's part."

4:15 p.m. ET - FOX NEWS ALERT

Cavuto: This will be a "busy week of speeches." It's a "make or break week for the President of the United States." He will give this speech on immigration "ahead of another big speech on Iraq" later in the week.

4:19 p.m. ET - Live shot of crowd waiting for Bush at Davis-Nonthan AFB.
Cavuto: "You can catch the President of the United States in Tucson, Arizona about 20 minutes from now."

Cavuto: "Waiting for the big guy in Tucson, Arizona. The President of the United States expected to outline his immigration reform plan."

Cavuto: "A guy with a rock solid marriage [the previous segment was about why so many Hollywood marriages end in divorce] - the President of the United States." There's "a lotta talk that he might have a new get-tough strategy."

4:33 p.m. ET - FOX NEWS ALERT
Cavuto: The president has "very low public approval ratings." He "could start moving those up with a convincing speech on how to deal with illegal immigrants in this country and more, the bad guys coming over the border from other countries." He is "also going to address, in rather starkly, probably more dramatic terms, what's at stake in the war in Iraq, so as I said, a make-or-break week for the president."

4:40 p.m. ET
Live shot of cheering crowd and Bush bounding on stage at Davis-Monthan AFB.
Cavuto: "All right. The President of the United States has arrived to pitch his plan on immigration reform. Let's listen."

Comment: It was as if a coronation was about to take place, which, I suppose, was precisely the plan.
