4 Years After 9/11 - Fox Treats Airline Cargo Security Like It's A New Story

Reported by Donna - November 16, 2005

Four years after 9/11 Studio B with Shepard Smith today acted like they had a 'new' story to tell on airport cargo security. In fact, Smith said before the break to "wait until you hear this, you're not going to believe it."

The story is the same old story about how the cargo that is shipped on passenger planes is very rarely checked. This 'scoop' was identified within a month of 9/11 and is outlined in this 2002, USA Today article.

What was new is that Congressman Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) has brought the subject to attention again because nothing has been done to improve the situation in the 4 years since 9/11. He has a plan that would bring the security of cargo on passenger planes up to snuff within 3 years.

Comment: Why is it that the Democrats have to practically stand over this administration to make sure things get done? This has been an inherant problem since 9/11. The question that should have been asked during this segment is - 'why hasn't anything been done on this problem?' Because it takes a Democrat to bring it to the attention of the American public and now Fox is making sure they air these stories to cover themselves.

It used to be in the past to just brush these stories aside and let the Republicans spout their talking points. Well, the American public has been paying attention and they want more than words, they want action. Homeland security is important to us and no, it doesn't mean just check our shoes, it means doing something, some type of action, to actually solve the problem instead of just talking about it. While the president and his administration have been busy conducting a war with cherry picked intelligence, real security concerns have gone by the wayside.

Why didn't Fox cover this issue indepth? Why didn't they expand on the report to include what the Bush administration has been doing these past 4 years when it comes to checking cargo on passenger planes?

Good questions. We urge you to write Fox and ask them.
